| Master Art in the Classroom!

|
October 2007
A special thanks to Patricia Morris, a Canadian kindergarten teacher, for providing this month’s resource. Patricia created a unique way for implementing art in her classroom, and is sharing it with us. A Master Artist's work serves as the basis for her students artwork.
Each file (.doc format) below contains a link to an original Master’s artwork, a detailed description of the art project, and photos of the student’s completed artwork. Based on the pictures, I would say Patricia has been very successful!

| Memory Books!

(Wade's first page of
his Memory Book!)
---> CLICK HERE for more Memory Book pictures.
|
September 2007
This months resource is about Memory Books. I've been making Memory Books for each student over the past 4 years now. Think of them as a personalized 'student year book'. They are nothing more than a three-ring binder that includes projects, student summaries of special activites, pictures of certain events, student artwork, and other things that provide a special memory of the school year. I collect the previously described items throughout the year and assemble them in the binder, giving it to the student's mother at our Mother's Day Tea (although we add a few extra pages to the end of the year). [Mom's really appreciate the book, since it archives an important point in thier child's life -- creating memories that last forever!]
The files below provide some of the pages (poems, wording, artwork, etc.) I use in each book. You can adapt them for your own situation, or use your own pages, since you probably already do similar things. There is also a file that describes a Memory Book in a little more detail. Click to the left for additional pictures of an actual Memory Book!!!

| Getting Off to a Good Start!

|
August 2007
This months resource includes a collection of ideas that I use when starting a new Kindergarten year. This is a transition time for students and parents, and I like to get things 'off to a smooth start.' So the files below (.doc format), explain some information that parents should consider, provide activies that students can focus on, etc.-- while getting ready! You can adapt them for your own needs.

| Classroom Gifts!

Mother's Day Gift
|
June 2007
My students really enjoy making special gifts for parents, grandparents and other family members; for Christmas, Mother's Day, and special occassions. So, this month's resource includes some of the gifts that we've made throughout the past school year. Since I often try to incorparate what the students have learned in their studies, we frequently write a personalized note on or with each gift.
Each file (.doc format) below contains a picture of a gift, and other information, ideas, etc. to provide more detail. Feel free to adapt them for your own needs. [Some are a lot of fun to do with the children!]

| Writing Ideas!

(For example --> be a Copycat!)
|
May 2007
A special thanks to Barb Smith from
Florida
, for providing this month’s resource. Barb created these writing ideas for her classroom, and shared them with us:
· The first idea is a series of 5 cards that help students as they become independent writers. I post the cards on the wall, review how to use them with my students, and reinforce the card use as they write.
· The second idea is a way to segment words based on a spinning wheel. The student flicks the spinner on the board, which tells the student how fast to segment the word. It’s a great way to keep the students engaged when segmenting new words.
· The last idea is a journal writing prompt tool that also involves a spinning wheel. The spinner determines if the students or teacher pick a topic to write about, if it’s about a book they have read, etc.

| More Easy Reading!

|
April 2007
This month's resource continues the Easy Reading theme started in February. You'll find 10 more reading flat books in each of the files provided below.
These stories are about as difficult and as long as those from last month. They are great for students that need to develop proficiency or confidence in their reading. As before, don't be afraid to edit them if they are too difficult for your class.

Red Plate
You Are Special Today!

|
January 2007
Red Plate -- You Are Special Today is my theme for January. I began using "Red Plate" in my classroom this year, as a way to acknowledge special accomplishments or achievements that my students make. Recent studies indicate that recoginition can be a better way to motivate, as opposed to traditional reward systems. So, I adopted the use of the Red Plate; as a way for family members and others to share in the student's accomplishments while at home. Examples of some Red Plate accomplishments include learning the alphabet, recognizing letters, counting, reading, and mastering math skills.
The Red Plate actually started as an early colonial tradition, for celebrating birthdays, holidays, and other special days. The Red Plate Old Tradition file below provides additional information on the history and background of Red Plate. However, you can also use Google to seach for even more details on the subject.
The Red Plate Explaination file provided below describes how I incorporated the predictable reader, poem and stickers into the concept. It also briefly describes how we use a Staples "EASY" button in our classroom -- to recognize smaller accomplishments. I'm sure there are other tools that you can use that are similiar.
