| Camp Kindergarten!

|
September 2005 The resource for this month features "Camp Kindergarten." Camp Kindergarten is aimed at transitioning my students to the new school environment, while also starting to grow and learn. It provides an integrated set of ideas and activities that I use during the first 2 weeks of the shool year. Oh yah, our camp is also about having FUN!
The following link will take you to a special "Camp Kindergarten" web page. It contains the lesson plans, special instructions, books, and other information for our camp. You are free to adapt any of this information for your own classroom. However if you have your own website, you are only allowed to link to the special Camp Kindergarten web page, and not to the individual files contained on that page.

| "I Can Cards"

|
July 2005
This month's resource features "I Can Cards". They are skill based or positive statement recognition cards that are given to students as they develop throughout the school year. They are made on business card stock (e.g. Avery 8371 and 5371), but I get mine from Sam's Club for $6 per 1000 cards (Royal Brites Brand).
There are 60 cards (6 pages) and a blank template in the files provided below. You can pick and choose what cards you want, making 10 copies per page or you could just use the cards that I've included in the files. The blank business card template is provided so you can customize your own pages. Just "cut and paste" the cards you want into the template, or prepare your own "I Can Card" based on your needs.
Just Right Click on the file, select 'Save' to store on your computer, and open later with Word.

| Summer Time Fun!

|
June 2005 Here are a few dictionaries that I made to prepare students for summertime writing. You can use them in your room during the last week of school, or can just give them to the students on the last day of school, so they have something to work with during the summer. The students can even color the images used in the dictionaries throughout the summer.Just Right Click on the file, select 'Save' to store on your computer, and open later with Word.

| Dinosaurs Rock!

|
May 2005 This month's resource focuses on dinosaurs. "Dinos" have always been one of my students favorite units! Included in the files below are a Dinosaur dictionary, story or play, predictable book, math page, color-a-rhyme worksheet, and a word making activity (for the word dinosaur).Just Right Click on the file, select 'Save' to store on your computer, and open later with Word.

| Consonant Blend and Short Vowel Stories

skunk
|
April 2005 I have received several emails asking for flip books featuring words that involve pattern recognition by beginning readers. So this month’s resource includes 40 stories that contain consonant blend (beginning and final digraphs) and short vowel words. Although they are more difficult than C-V-C words, they are a great way to introduce 'blends' and 'short vowels' -- adding variety to our other stories! My students really enjoyed the challenge in reading the stories.
Remember to tape a piece of cardstock over each picture, so the student can sound out the word, and then flip the cardstock up to check his pronunciation of the word.
Just Right Click on the file, select 'Save' to store on your computer, and open later with Word.

| Spring Is In The Air!

|
March Bonus 2005
Here are some new single page stories that I prepared for my class. There are 10 Easter, 10 Spring and 10 Space single page stories in each of the files provided below. I have also included a Space Dictionary, since many teachers are covering space during the spring. I printed out the files on cardstock and let the students take them home for extra support reading.
Just Right Click on the file, select 'Save' to store on your computer, and open later with Word.

| Measuring Up!

|
March 2005
This month's resource is about measuring length. I introduce the topic when my students first begin to learn to count and recognize numbers, and we work at it throughout the year. Measuring length can be easily integrated into math, science or other lessons, and is a great way to keep the children actively engaged in 'hands-on' learning. I incorporate the use two different types of activities to reinforce measurement concepts in my classroom.
One activity involves the concept of 'feet' and 'inches', and students measure the length of various items that I provide (e.g. lace, ribbon, string, etc.). We use laminated 'measuring feet' made from cardstock and 'inch cubes' to take actual measurements, and they record their answers on a record sheet. The student lays out the item that will be measured, and add 'feet' and 'inch cubes' to determine the final length. Pictures of a laminated measuring foot and inch squares are provided below, and a copy of a record sheet is also provided below.
The other activity uses worksheets with lines of various lengths that the students measure in inches. Each line has a dot on one end of the line that is used to lineup with the 'dot' on a ruler (at zero). (Students are taught early that the key to making accurate length measurements is to always line up the dots on the ruler.) The children then simply run their finger down the ruler to the end of the line to take a 'nearest inch' measurement. They write the measured length on top of each line, eventually completing all lines on the worksheet. I have included one of my worksheets (in Word format) as a guide so you can make others. If your students are like mine, they will really enjoy completing the worksheets at home with other family members.
Just Right Click on the file, select 'Save' to store on your computer, and open later with Word.
Just Left Click on a picture below, to view a closeup of a 'measuring foot' and 'inch cubes', or other measuring worksheets that I use in my classroom.

Mini-Office and Dictionary Writing Tools

|
January 2005
Writing is one of the cornerstones in my kindergarten class--we begin journal writing the first day of school and continue it throughout the year. In addition to the word wall activities that can be found in our 2004 Teacher Resources, my students also use other writing tools to help with writing. The 'mini-office' and monthly dictionaries are some of my favorite, since student writing progresses quickly with their use.
The mini-office consists of two laminated pages stapled to each inside of a standard size file folder. On the left side of the folder there is space to write personal information for each child. (I include the child's name, birthdate, telephone number, etc.) The pages also include common family words, shapes, weather words, days of the week, months, etc., and correct letter and number formation to twenty. On the outside of the folder, I have their first and last name written on lined paper which serves as a model for writing their names. In addition, I add special words for that child such as family member, friend or pet names, when I determine they are ready for more difficult words. The mini office is small enough so that it can be easily referred to while writing.
I also prepare monthly dictionaries of common words that can be referenced while writing. Each dictionary includes a picture and spelling of several words that are associated with that month. For instance, my January dictionary includes snow, winter, snowman, sled, scarf, etc. The students are encouraged to copy and use these words in their daily journals.
Copies of this years Mini-Office and January Dictionary are provided below. Just Right Click on the file, select 'Save' to store on your computer, and open later with Word.
